Is Vertical Housing the Future of Urban Development in Pakistan?

Numerous factors such as migration are significantly contributing to the exponential population growth and increasing urbanization in Pakistan. The needs for increasing urbanization and population can be met through vertical housing.

With the increasing population and diminishing land, it is becoming more and more difficult to meet both housing and agricultural needs to meet raw food production needs. In this regard, taller structures appear to be the only realistic and feasible solution to provide housing for everyone.

Vertical housing not only comes with multiple benefits such as the preservation of land for plantation, meeting housing needs, and promoting a stronger community living. With all these benefits, tall structured buildings are highly in-demand in big cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Lahore.

Any skyscraper, apartments, high-rise residential buildings in cities, or tall-structured buildings built on a small plot fall under the category of vertical housing.

Advantages of Vertical Housing:

Ecological Sustainability:

Vertical housing and living promote ecological sustainability and social responsibility. The phenomenon behind this is that the space and amenities that otherwise would have been occupied by a single individual get shared by several people. This helps in preserving space to take measures for ecological sustainability such as afforestation, and plantation for growing food.

Affordable Living:

When people share a living space they also share numerous amenities such as rooftop gardens, swimming pools, gyms, generators, and even electricity connections. This sharing of living space and amenities significantly reduce living expenses.

Promotion of Community Living:

Not only a greater number of people is accommodated in a single place at affordable rates through vertical living, but community living is also promoted through it.

Generation of Solar Energy:

Skyscraper buildings provide an energy-sufficient living experience to their residents. The altitude of buildings makes them suitable for mounting solar panels and generating the building’s own electricity.

An Ecofriendly Approach:

Vertical buildings are the need of the hour not only to overcome the housing crisis in Pakistan but also to have better environmental impacts.

Preserving land will help us build more green spaces that will help us to overcome environmental hazards such as global warming, soil erosion, and many more.

Considering all the benefits and lack of proper housing in Pakistan, vertical housing seems to be the need of the hour. On such a basis and the fact that demand for apartment living is rapidly increasing, it can be concluded that vertical housing is the new of future of urbanization in Pakistan.
